Title: Elgin Trench Watch, Circa 1918, Serviced
Description: EXCELLENT condition. Rare 1918 American made Elgin trench watch with an Oresilver painted (black at one time) fixed lug case which implements a screw on back and bezel. It was/is more water and dust resistant than snap on bezels and backs, like this type click here. The inside of the back still has paint in it, two service marks, the case maker and material. Some of that original paint can be seen around each lug, where it is attached to the case but most is long gone, only showing the silver alloy (Oresilver) underneath. Original glass crystal from this long ago? It could be. It is thick and has a purple color and quite a few scuffs and light scratches. It and the strap have been with the watch for half a century, at least. My educated guess is that there is a very good chance the glass is original or with-in 20 years, the strap....maybe more like 1930's? This General Pershing Elgin probably had a one piece strap but without the second, wider backing. The buckle on our strap is not original for sure, by the way. The screw on back has typical striation marks from years of wear. Those one piece straps go right under the watch and rub on it. The longer side of this English Moroccan leather strap has just a little wear/age so we can talk about a new wire lug/fixed lug version to attach instead. And besides, you should save this one for historical reasons. When you put it together with the overall condition and originality of the watch it adds up to a more interesting provenance, unspoken but plain to see. Looking at this rare 48 star dial in black enamel will mesmerize you if you like to study 92 perfect years. The lum, (yes it still has original luminescent numbers), is intact for about 3/4's of the Arabic numerals. It is radium infused material, I am sure, possibly zinc sulphide or phosphate. The crown is original as are the unique hands. Measures 31 mm wide (not including the crown) x 40 mm long x 12 mm thick. {$499} Item #6081 SOLD
